Mary has over twenty-five years of experience in the accounting industry, primarily in local CPA firms serving individuals and closely-held professional practices and businesses. She has also served as Controller of a local professional engineering firm.
She graduated from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington with a Bachelor of Science in Accountancy in May of 1981 and from the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Arts in History in January of 1971. She is currently licensed as a CPA in the State of North Carolina. She is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), North Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants (NCACPA) and the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts (NACVA).
Upon receiving her accounting degree, she was employed by Murray, Staton & Fisher, CPA’s. During her fourteen year tenure she rose to the position of Managing Partner in this firm which was Murray, Thomson & Company, CPA’s at the time of her departure from it. In addition to the direct provision of accounting and tax services to clients, she supervised the activities of approximately twelve CPA’s and all support staff. She was in charge of implementing and maintaining quality control standards in the areas of tax return services, financial statement preparation and consulting services. For the past thirteen years she has been the owner of Mary C. Thomson, CPA, PA, in which capacity she has provided tax planning and preparation services for closely held professional practices and businesses and for individuals, estates and trusts. She has assisted in planning and negotiation of the purchase and sale and merger of business interests. She has represented clients before the IRS in income tax and payroll tax matters, up to and including the appeals level. She has also provided litigation support services and testimony in several matters in the local district court and in US Bankruptcy Court.
